BATFORD SPRING LOCAL NATURAL RESERVE

There is a place where nature retains its truest essence and intrinsic value.

There is a place where you can reconnect with life and rediscover calmness – away from the hustles and bustle of this world.

There is a place where meadow, spring, wood, river, stream and wildlife merge to produce rare marvels and values, hard to come by, nor convey.

This, I present to you now. Welcome to the Batford Spring Local Natural Reserve – a serene environment that exudes beauty, bliss and bloom. Welcome to Batford Springs, one place where you can relax, play, rejuvenate and be yourself in nature’s shadow once again.

Batford Springs was accredited rights as a local natural reserve by Natural England in 1995. As the name implies, it is ideal for you if you are a lover of water. The reserve features fresh springs amidst a network of streams and ponds. There is also an artificial waterfall, ideally placed for the amusement of visitors. Again, you’ve got a pond, the River Lea, riverside walks and meandering paths which spider-web throughout the site. The pleasure of water and its therapeutic effect clearly abounds here.

Now, apart from the water, the reserve has open grassland and a small but picturesque wooded area. The lane provides a play area for you and your family to have fun and enjoy your day. It also features picnic tables to wolf down your meal when hunger attacks. Your children can create, enjoy and share their memories here. At Batford Springs, there is a 216m long boardwalk and a 10m bridge over the chalk stream. The bridge and boardwalk open up the reserve to people on wheelchairs. It features side meshing and handrails that help prevent visitors and dogs plunging into the water and helps conserve the habitat.

It might also please you to know that the spring reserve is a green environment, eternally alive and bubbling with unique wildlife and ecological features. It houses wetland birds that bring breathtaking beauty to the territory. You’ve also got mayflies, stoneflies, freshwater shrimp and caddisflies. Perhaps you are not familiar with freshwater wildlife. Here is your chance.

Batford Springs is a gift and a wonder of nature to us all. You certainly don’t want to miss the pleasure of beholding this beautifully conserved environment. They are open every day of the week – from dawn to dusk. Feel free to check them out. You might just be visiting the eighth wonder of the world. The reserve is located at Lower Luton Road, Harpenden, AL5 5AQ, England.
