In days gone by, to quote a famous poet, I regularly visited a close friend who lived near a ranch. We would spend the endless days of glorious summers exploring with her brothers and sisters. Being an animal lover (as you well know), I noticed how the cows and sheep were orderly and well controlled, not a frolic in sight. My friend’s brother explained to me, that giving any animal an expansive grazing area was what did the trick. What a fantastic idea that was. See, size DOES matter.
During one of my most recent tours, I visited Blow’s Downs. It was there that I confirmed the theory he shared with me.
Blow’s Down is set in a 77-hectare pasture of flower-rich grassland. Its colorful adornment has been lovingly preserved over time, and the love shines through, believe me. One noticeable fun factor is the steep chalk hills, many a time I have relished the challenge of the climb, and most often the time sliding embarrassingly to the base with bumps and bruises to boot.
Passing migrant birds draws avid visitors during the spring and up to the autumn. It has the acclaimed right to boast the largest population of great pignuts in the country. A rare claim to fame indeed and one for the family album! Since it is a natural reserve, cattle and ponies graze wild and free, just as nature intended. However, Blow’s Downs offers more than stunning views and grazing orchards. Visitors can cycle, run and walk around the chartered routes nearby. In all, it is such a fabulous place to see.
There’s more. You can bring along your children or friends, just to embrace and enjoy the wonderous moments that this picture painting of a landscape has to offer. You can bring along your dog, but remember the livestock grazing peacefully, best not disturb them. You will find this place a breath of fresh air, just as I do, and it is always open. I truly encourage you to take advantage of the glamour and beauty that Blow’s Down has to offer during the spring and summer months. Take heed though, it is rather hilly, but the steepest mounts are cordoned off, so a gentle meander is guaranteed.
Make time for a visit, it is a truly beautiful place to enjoy.
Blow’s Downs Nature Reserve is located at the Oakwood Avenue, Dunstable, Bedfordshire, LU5 4AR
