A town located in the southern region of Somerset, nestled on the border of Devon and Dorset, Chard’s population is about 13,000 with an altitude of 397 ft, making it one of the highest towns in Somerset. And that spells adventure for climbers. Given its height, Chard offers a host of places where you can go climbing with your loved ones — whether for educative or recreative purposes.
Apart from the adventure guaranteed, the Chard and District Museum is replete with inspiring stories and historical treasures.
Let's talk about the bootmaker James Gillingham's work and legacy. Perhaps you are aware that in the early 1900s, Gillingham invented and constructed the very first artificial limbs William Singleton. The latter was tragically involved in a cannon accident and lost his limbs.
Let's also talk about John Stringfellow, a Victorian aeronautical pioneer. He carried out extensive work on an aerial steam carriage to demonstrate to the watching world that an engine-powered flight was possible. There are many other items of national relevance and ingenuity which can be seen within the walls at the Chard Museum.
This town's unique feature is the stream that runs alongside Fore Street, creating an estuary that flows into the Bristol Channel and beyond. But then, another interesting sight to behold other than the stream is the 91.4-acre Chard reservoir, a natural reserve in the northeast region, surrounded by woodlands. The reservoir can be used for fishing, bird watching, dog walking or just a meander through nature’s beauty. There are even caves, which have been in existence in the town as far back as 1235. Dare you enter?
Chard, Somerset, also provides an avenue for various local sports clubs such as the Chard Hockey Club and a number of football clubs. You've also got Forde Abbey and Gardens within a stone’s throw of the town, one of the richest monasteries with the most fantastic, breathtaking gardens and lakes that you can find in the country. Note that this monastery has been in existence for more than 800 years, and its history has been carefully preserved over the years. That's just a great spot to take your kids.
It may interest you to know there are still many other attractions in Chard if you can handle any more! Examples include the Candlelight Inn, Ferne Animal Sanctuary, Sharandys Birds of Prey, the 12,000 square foot Spiller Kitchen Centre and Dillington House.
