Welcoming in the Year of the Snake: My Experience at London’s Chinese New Year 2025

Lunar New Year has always fascinated me—the colours, the traditions, the sense of renewal and revival. So, this year, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to celebrate in the heart of it all: Chinatown, London.

A City Transformed

From the moment I stepped into Chinatown, it felt like I had entered a different world. Hundreds of red lanterns swayed overhead, casting a warm glow against the winter sky. The streets were packed with people—families, tourists, and Londoners like me, all eager to soak in the festive energy.

Performers in vibrant lion and dragon costumes weaved through the crowd, their rhythmic movements keeping time with the beat of the drums. The sound was electrifying. There’s something about live performances that brings the celebration to life in a way no video ever could.

Year of the Snake Vibes

2025 marks the Year of the Snake, a sign known for intelligence, determination, and transformation. There was a sense of letting go of the old and stepping into something new—which, if I’m being honest, resonates deeply with me. The snake sheds its skin, leaving the past behind, and that’s exactly the kind of energy I want to carry into this year.

Food! Of Course!

No visit to Chinatown is complete without indulging in amazing food. I treated myself to steaming dumplings, crispy duck and a hot cup of jasmine tea to warm up from the cold. The queues for some restaurants were long, but the wait was worth it. There’s something special about sitting down to a meal in the middle of such a lively celebration.

Final Thoughts

London never fails when it comes to big cultural celebrations, but Chinese New Year is truly something special. Whether it’s the dazzling decorations, the powerful performances or just the feeling of being part of something bigger, I left feeling inspired and ready for whatever 2025 has in store.

Did you celebrate the Lunar New Year this year? If so, how? Let me know—I’d love to hear your experiences!
